GODSPELL

Godspell.jpg

Godspell was conceived and originally directed by John- Michael Tebelak and music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The play in Fair Oaks Festival was directed by Sam Williams. It is a rock gospel musical which is loosely based on Gospel of St. Matthew so this is play with religious theme.
Godspell is story of Parables of the Kingdom of God. Jesus came to earth to establish "his Kingdom", the "Kingdom of God", the "Kingdom of Heaven" says Matthew, who does not say "God" in respect to the Jews who did not mentioned the name of God, out of respect to Him... but the "Kingdom of God" is the same as the "Kingdom of Heaven", or just "the Kingdom", but is there any new translation of these kingdom possible? Is our kingdom in 2006 looks like early Christians 2000 years ago? I think the main point of the play is showing these new translation and answering this question that “How does God want a citizen of his kingdom to behave?” Can we find the answer of this question in old parables? As it comes in the play “All of Jesus’ parables contain parts of the answer to this question, for the present and future realities of the kingdom of God are what Christ’s life, work, message, death, resurrection and His Priesthood are all about.”
The play contains two main acts, each of them took around one hour, and each act had nine parts. The show begins with the Voice of God declaring his supremacy: “My name is known: God and King. I am most in majesty, in whom no beginning may be and no end.” In first act I like the song and music of Day by Day the most and I found All Good Gifts the most boring. Act two started with reprise of Learn Your Lesson Well and then with voice of Jesus who said: “Jesus says, "This is the beginning.”
The play end with music and song Day by Day (which they played once in first act) by all. It was a good end for second hour.
